If you’ve finished up your massage education, you’ve almost crossed the finish line on the path to practicing massage therapy. There’s just one more task that you’ll need to accomplish before you can become a licensed practitioner. In 44 out of 50 U.S. states (along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands), you’ll need to pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination, or MBLEx test, in order to fulfill your state’s licensure requirements. Are you wondering how to prepare for the MBLEx exam? Getting ready for such a massive undertaking can be a bit nerve-racking, and you’ll need to study effectively in order to pass the exam on your first attempt. Fortunately, though, studying for the MBLEx has never been easier thanks to the availability of online MBLEx practice tests.
MBLEx Format and Structure
The MBLEx is a standardized test. This means that the layout, format, structure, and even the content of the exam are predictable to some extent. This is great news for test takers, because it means that you’ll be able to prepare yourself thoroughly for the test. It’s important, however, to ensure that you devote enough time to studying, and that you study in the most effective manner possible in order to maximize the effectiveness of your efforts.
In terms of format and content, the MBLEx is divided up into a number of individual sections. Each of these sections contains specific questions related to their parent topic. These sections include:
- Patient populations, massage technique contraindication, pathology, and areas of caution
- The culture and history of massage therapy and bodywork methodology
- How to assess clients, formulate treatment plans, and reassess clients based on response to treatment
- Ethical considerations, boundaries, and laws related to therapeutic massage
- Guidelines for massage therapists in a professional practice setting
- Techniques for soft tissue massage therapy
- Kinesiology
- Anatomy and physiology
Familiarizing yourself with this content is a great first step, especially if it’s been awhile since you completed your massage education. Animated review courses are an excellent way of brushing up on your knowledge of a particular topic area on the MBLEx test.
The Important of Practice Tests
The MBLEx exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions in total, divided roughly equally between the above subject areas. You’ll be given 2 hours to answer these questions using a computer interface.
As you can imagine, this kind of testing will feel somewhat different from the tests you took in massage school. There’s no tactile component, and you’re not taking the test with pen or pencil. You’ll be using a computer the entire time, and all of the questions will be identically formatted.
Don’t fret, though: this is actually a good thing. Because the format of the MBLEx is fixed, you can prepare for it in a predetermined way.
Without a doubt, the best way to prepare for the exam is by taking as many MBLEx practice tests as possible. Studies have demonstrated that practice tests are a highly effective means of preparing for the real thing. In fact, they’re much more effective than simply reviewing the material to be tested.
